About Us Service for Peace prepares conscientious people to take on the role of peacemakers. A Peacemaker is one who can work with diverse populations to address critical issues and offer real solutions. We bridge gaps between youth of differing socioeconomic backgrounds, reducing alienation and isolation and allowing a sense of community to emerge. SFP has reached college and high school students, as well as underserved constituent groups.
A Focus on Young People Our focus is youth development. We create projects and educational programs designed to motivate volunteers to serve their communities on a continual basis by helping them to maximize their service experience. Our range of service and learning programs include peer mentoring/tutoring at risk youth, fostering interreligious cooperation through dialogue and team service, community surveys for disaster preparedness, dispensing first aid supplies and information, and environmental improvement projects to ensure public safety and community revitalization.
Our History In 2002, 300 youth aged 14-20 participated in the first Summer of Service (SOS) program in Washington, DC. 40,000 hours of documented service included a 1-day clean-up of 20 DC public schools which the Washington Post said ‘saved the District $400,000.’ Service for Peace has also been an active participant in the Season’s of Service including annual involvement in National Youth Service Day, Make a Difference Day and Join Hands Day. We also recently concluded a national training conference in partnership with the Point of Light Foundation for the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Serivce. Service for Peace has also been committed to awarding young volunteers for their commitment to service by being a national recognized agency for the President’s Volunteer Service Award. To date SFP has awarded hundreds of youth for the 100+ hours of service to their communities.
In Taiwan Service For Peace has conducted hundreds of service projects like visiting senior citizen homes or orphanages, mountain or beach cleaning etc. since 2001. In 2004 Service For Peace Taiwan initiated the planetKIDS club project together with CARP. The first semester of 2004 was just concluded successfully. About 30 volunteers - mostly high school students - participated in this project involving grade 3-6 school children at a primary school in Taipei.
